Professor Tom Calma AO is an Aboriginal Elder from the Kungarakan tribal group and a member of the Iwaidja tribal group. Prof Calma was the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner at the Australian Human Rights Commission from 2004 to 2010. He also served as Race Discrimination Commissioner from 2004 until 2009. His 2005 Social Justice Report laid the foundation for the Close the Gap Campaign. In his 2009 Social Justice Report he wrote about justice reinvestment as a solution to the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the criminal justice system. Prof Calma is a Champion of Just Reinvest NSW and was a member of the Advisory Committee of the Australian Law Reform Commission’s Inquiry into the incarceration rate of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. He is a professor at the University of Sydney, Chancellor of the University of Canberra and Co-Chair of Reconciliation Australia.
