Dear reader,
Today is our last day of publishing for 2013, but before we disconnect and venture into the summer sun, we’d like to say thanks to you for being part of the NM community.
It’s been a huge year in politics and also in new media. New Matilda is one of the oldest online outfits in Australia, but it’s by no means the biggest. Each year we welcome more well-resourced competitors to the sector — and yet our traffic continues to grow, as does our pool of paid-up subscribers.
The media is a precarious industry to be in and the job of keeping NM online constantly throws up new challenges. The site runs on a tiny budget and the people who edit it and write for it all do so largely for the love not the money.
Associate editor Adam Brereton has done some great journalism this year and shown endless energy for the NM cause. Contributing editor Wendy Bacon has been an invaluable sounding board and source of top quality investigative work. And of course, our national affairs correspondent Ben Eltham has continued to set the bar high for Australian political commentary.
We’ve also had some changes to the team: we said a sad farewell to former managing editor Catriona Menzies-Pike, who scored a position at The Conversation, and we welcomed Max Chalmers as an editorial assistant.
To our subscribers, we are grateful that you honoured us with your support in 2013. We have no wealthy backers, just you.
To those who haven’t yet subscribed pitch in here and help make sure 2014 — NM’s tenth year — is its best yet.
Every dollar you throw our way goes directly to the people who write for and edit the website.
Next year Wendy, Adam and I will be heading up a team of young reporters on a series of in-depth investigative projects. In January we’ll also be seeking your feedback on the issues and stories that you want us to uncover.
Until then, have a fantastic summer break.
