Human Rights Act Campaign Update

0

New Matilda’s Human Rights Act campaign will hold its Darwin launch at 6pm on Friday 21 July 2006 at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. Speakers will include Susan Ryan AO, Colin McDonald QC, Senator Trish Crossin, Sharon Payne, CEO of the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency, Charlie King from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Tony Fitzgerald, NT Anti-Discrimination Commissioner.

The Melbourne launch of the Human Rights Act will take place at 4.30 pm on 13 August 2006 at the Malthouse Theatre in Southbank. This will coincide with the release of the final draft of the Human Rights Bill.Speakers will include Professor Marcia Langton, Julian Burnside QC, Susan Ryan AO and Associate Professor Spencer Zifcak, with more to be announced.

The draft Bill has been released to the Australian community as part of the wider consultation phase. This phase is in its final stages, culminating in the launch in Melbourne. We are proud to report that many individuals and organisations have been contributing to the consultation process through New Matilda’s online forum, or through submissions which are published on the website. Even though the formal consultation phase is nearing completion, we continue to encourage and invite feedback on the Bill. We thank you for all submissions and comments received.

As the advocacy phase of the campaign is warming up, we encourage community organisations to hold forums to allow their members to consider the Bill. We are happy to assist in this process in any way we can. We hope to have the bill introduced as a private members bill at the end of the year. As always, we appreciate your comments, ideas and support. Any donations are greatly appreciated. Please contact me if you would like to donate to the campaign or sponsor an event. Every little bit helps.

I would like to take this opportunity on behalf New Matilda to thank the outgoing Executive Officer, Nick Carney, for all his tireless work on this campaign. Nick will remain on the Human Rights Act campaign committee.

Regards,
Helen Reynolds
