Advertising Policy

New Matilda currently does not accept paid advertising.

While we acknowledge that advertising space is valuable, particularly to small independent media outlets, we’ve adopted this policy to ensure that our journalism is never affected by commercial interests.

Instead, our business model relies on readers taking paid subscriptions to New Matilda. As part of this revenue model, from June 2024, subscribers to New Matilda can nominate not-for-profits and Aboriginal enterprises (public or private) to receive free ongoing banner advertising on New Matilda.

This is a unique media business model – we’re not aware of any media outlet anywhere in the world silly enough to try it – but it fits neatly with our values, which centre around building trust in our readers, and altruism in our actions.

We also occasionally give away our advertising to businesses, festivals or organisations (sometimes contras) whose morals align with ours. We’re particularly partial to businesses that operate ethically in rural and remote Australia. For example, New Matilda is a strong and ongoing supporter of the annual Broken Heel Festival in Outback NSW, and you’ll see their ads sprinkled around the site from time to time.

As of June 2024, New Matilda has over 30,000 registered email users who receive notification about new content on the site, initiatives from New Matilda, and our regular news digest.
