It’s often complained that the youth (these days!) are apathetic, politically disengaged, or just plain lazy. But for a small group of toddlers who paid a visit to Malcolm Turnbull’s electorate office yesterday, playtime just got political.
Three generations of women yesterday took over the PM’s Edgecliff office, demanding the government end the offshore detention of asylum seekers.
Protesters arrived at the office around 1pm, promptly setting up a ‘playgroup protest’, allowing the younger among them to crawl gaily across a large banner demanding the Member for Wentworth “close the camps”.
Carrying posters that read “No votes in abuse,” and “Bring them here,” the protesters occupied the office until the arrival of police, and later voluntarily departed.
It’s not the first time ‘Mums 4 Refugees’ has attempted to draw attention the the plight of those held in offshore detention.
In November last year, the group performed a similar protest action at Department of Immigration offices in Melbourne. One woman was removed by police while breastfeeding her child.
