Thousands March Against The Abbott Government

By New Matilda

March 17, 2014

Thousands of Australians marched in the capital cities and regional centres over the weekend, in protest against the policies of the Federal Government led by Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

Thunder and rain did not deter the thousands who crowded into Belmore Park in central Sydney for the March In March rally on Sunday.

Speeches were given by, among others, Refugee Action Coalition spokesperson Nick Riemer, Community Action Against Homophobia convenor Cat Rose, NM Contributing Editor Wendy Bacon and British singer and activist Billy Bragg. Bragg performed three songs, dedicating one to Gina Rinehart after hearing her say that Australia needs a good dose of Thatcherism.

The rally attracted a variety of groups, including LGBTI activists, unionists, and a year 9 class who grilled Tony Abbott last week

The crowd marched along Broadway to Victoria Park, receiving encouragement and appreciation from other members of the public on the way.
