In her books The Caged Virgin and Infidel, former Dutch MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali argues for the emancipation of Muslim women. Her views on liberty, religion and feminism have made her the darling of the Right and reviled by those who believe she unfairly paints all Muslims as anti-Western fundamentalists.
Hirsi Ali was in Australia this week as a guest of the Sydney Writers’ Festival. In this interview with New Matilda‘s Irfan Yusuf and José Borghino, she argues for the separation of Mosque and State in Islamic culture, and calls for a new moderate Islamic movement to rival the charisma of the radicals.
